If Tigo is the SIM in your phone, Tigo Pesa is the wallet that matters, and almost everything written about M-Pesa applies with a different menu.
Quick answerTigo Pesa deposits reach a betting account in seconds through a push prompt or a manual business-number payment. Payouts return to the same registered line, and the name on the wallet has to match the betting account.
Tigo Pesa is the mobile money service most Tanzanians still name that way, even after the operator rebranded its consumer services.
Betting cashiers list it under one label or the other. If you cannot find the name you expect, look for the one that matches your SIM rather than the brand you remember.
Mechanically nothing changed. The menu, the business-number payment and the confirmation message work the way they always did.
From the site: pick the wallet in the cashier, enter the amount, and approve the prompt that arrives on your phone. The balance updates within seconds.
From the phone: open the mobile money menu, choose the option for paying a business, enter the operator's number and your account reference, then confirm.
The push route makes fewer mistakes because it fills the reference for you. The manual route is the fallback when a prompt does not arrive.
| Route | Common failure | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Push prompt | Prompt never arrives on weak signal | Retry, or switch to the manual route |
| Business number | Reference typed wrong | Check digit by digit against the cashier |
| Either | Balance posts late | Wait ten minutes before raising it |

Every transaction produces a message with a reference, the amount, the destination and the time. That message is the only evidence either side can act on.
Keep the day's messages, or screenshot them. Support cannot investigate a missing deposit without the reference, and no amount of insisting replaces it.
Send five things at once when something goes missing: reference, amount, exact time, your number, and the betting account reference.
A missing deposit with a reference is a ticket. A missing deposit without one is a conversation.
Withdrawals go to the line registered on the betting account, and the wallet has to be registered in your own name. That rule is the same across every operator here.
After the operator releases the money, it travels the same rail as any transfer. Cashing out at an agent then depends on that agent holding float.
Evening and month-end float shortages are an agent problem, not a betting problem. A quieter counter or a smaller amount solves it.
The withdrawal page sets out the three gates a payout passes and which one each delay belongs to.
Mobile money tariffs are set by the provider and move with regulation, so we do not print them. The current charge appears in the menu before you confirm.
The shape is what matters: small transfers cost proportionally more. Three top-ups of a third each cost clearly more than one deposit of the whole amount.
Over a month those charges are a real number, and they are invisible because they never appear as a bet.
The betting account, the national ID and the wallet registration must carry the same name. Operators check this at the first withdrawal, not at the first deposit.
Depositing from a friend's or relative's line is the usual way this breaks, and it is painful to unwind once a payout is pending.
If the SIM you use is registered to somebody else, sort that out before betting. Registration lists what the operator will want to see.
There is no clever arbitrage between wallets in this market. The right one is the one you already hold and control.
Airtel Money and M-Pesa have their own pages, and payments covers the whole cashier in one place.
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Which wallet is fastest? | They are the same in practice: seconds either way |
| Which is most widely supported? | M-Pesa, with Tigo Pesa and Airtel Money close behind |
| Which should I use? | The one on the SIM registered in your own name |
| Can I use two? | Yes, but payouts still return to the registered line |
Choose the wallet in the cashier and approve the prompt on your phone, or pay the operator's business number from the mobile money menu using your account reference.
By most of them, though the label in the cashier may be the newer brand name. Check the list before registering if it is your only wallet.
The transaction reference from the confirmation message, the amount, the exact time, your number and your betting account reference. All five in one message.
Yes, to the line registered on your account, provided the wallet is in your own name and verification is complete.
The provider's standard charge, shown in the menu before you confirm. Small transfers cost proportionally more than larger ones.
Generally no. Payouts return to the registered number on the account, which is also the number that must be in your name.
The agent has run out of float, which happens in busy areas in the evening and everywhere at month end. Try a quieter counter or a smaller amount.
No. The menu, the business-number payment and the confirmation message work as before; only the name in some cashiers has changed.
